Who We Are
The Elk Valley Field House Society is a not-for-profit organization built by passionate community volunteers. Our formation was driven by the need to fill a significant gap in recreation and gathering spaces after the closure of the Fernie Community Centre (FCC). We are committed to supporting the physical, mental, economic, and social well-being of residents in the Elk Valley. Through funding, building, and operating a multi-use recreational and gathering facility, we aim to enrich the lives of community members.
Our Mission
Our mission is to enhance the well-being of individuals in the Elk Valley by providing accessible spaces for physical activity, social interaction, and community events. By creating a sustainable, community-focused facility, we aim to foster an environment where people of all ages and backgrounds can connect, engage, and thrive.
Our Values
Community-Centered: We believe in the power of community involvement and ensuring the needs of residents guide our efforts.
Sustainability: Our goal is to develop a facility that not only serves current needs but is adaptable for future generations.
Inclusivity: We aim to create a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability.
Health & Well-being: We prioritize spaces and activities that promote physical, mental, and social wellness for individuals and families.
The Challenge
The closure of the Fernie Community Centre has left a void in the region's recreational infrastructure, affecting youth, senior, education, and tourism programs, as well as limiting space for community events. The FCC had over 2,667 hours of usage in 2023 alone for various programs and events demonstrating that the need for a dedicated community space is critical. Additionally, the Elk Valley's growing population (13–17% annually) and rising sports participation have amplified the demand for new and improved facilities.
Our Solution - Fund, Build & Operate a Multi-Use Facility Built by and for the Community
The proposed facility will meet immediate community needs and provide a sustainable, community-focused solution. It will be owned and operated by the Elk Valley Field House Society, ensuring effective management and long-term viability.
Expanded Capacity: At more than three times the size of the FCC, it will accommodate multiple user groups simultaneously with extended hours of operation and flexible dividers for varied activities.
Public Washrooms: Integration of exterior accessible washrooms to expand public availability in a high traffic/demand area.

The Society is well positioned to apply for a variety of funding (grants, government assistance and commercial donations) to ensure the building and ongoing operation of the facility does not come as a burden to local residents in the form of property tax increases/revenues. And the not-for-profit nature of the Society ensures a focus on maintaining user fees as modest as possible to operate the facility while properly planning for capital reserves for maintenance, repair and even possible future upgrades/replacement.
